Nobody should worry about travelling to Cancun or Playa del Carmen. My family goes in June every year and we’ve never had a problem. In fact, I even left my passport in a bathroom at the Cancun airport and someone found it and had me paged. We have always been extremely well-treated, both by the staff at Royal Resorts and the locals. Telling people not to visit Cancun because of the violence along the border is like telling people not to visit San Antonio because of the violence in Los Angeles and Miami.

Having lived overseas for most of my life and traveling extensively I find there are basic safety precautions one needs to take regardless of where they are–country, big city/small village, airport, shopping mall, etc. Be aware of your surroundings, do not go anywhere you feel uncomfortable, make sure all guides are registered, that you take accredited taxis, and don’t flash money or jewelry. Be a smart visitor when in another country/culture. I’ve had attempts made on my purse in San Francisco, Reno, and NY. Get real. It happens all over–from robbery to drive-by shootings. Funny thing, while in Rio I stupidly left my purse at the top of the “Christ Statue.” A lovely young mother handed it to the security guard and it was returned. There are good and bad people all over the world. So don’t prejudge, take precautions and act as a positive role model for the good American, not the ugly American. Loud and drunk? You’re setting yourself up as a target; flash your cash? don’t be stupid. Behave and be aware.

Dear Lou: Thank you for writing to Royal Resorts News. I am sorry to hear about your experience in Playa del Carmen. Errors may occur with restaurant checks anywhere in the world and if something doesn’t look quite right, it is always a good idea to ask for clarification.

Last summer we had dinner at Frieda’s on Avenida 5th and when I mentioned that the steak was not as good as expected they subsequently added a 18% gratuity on my check. I guess they feared I would not tip them. Instead they assured themselves a generous tip.

I will NOT be going to that restaurant again. The food is not as described on the menu. And the 1/2 priced drinks are actually 1/2 the size.

My friend and I have just returned from three weeks at the Royal Cancun. I never felt unsafe or even concerned during all of that time. We used the buses to travel along Kulkulkan Blvd. and into Cancun City constantly. One gentleman walked us to a fabric store that we were seeking because Avenida Tulum had been blocked off that day. We needed a dentist and were directed to his office by a lovely lady who “thanked us for coming to Mexico”.
