We are sure that you have been avidly following our beach restoration coverage on this website and on www.royalresortsnews.com and as the Cancún project wraps up at the end of this month, we wanted to share some additional photos with you.
The beaches at The Royal Sands, The Royal Mayan, The Royal Caribbean and The Royal Islander have been completely restored and palapas and sun loungers have been reinstalled, ready and waiting for your next trip.
The global interest in this project has been immense and the Mexican Tourist Board has been proudly showing off Cancún’s pearly white beaches at the FITUR Travel Show in Madrid, Spain (January 18 – 22).

Cancún Beach Restoration Fast Facts

* 12 kilometers of beach restored from Punta Cancún to Punta Nizuc
* 4.5 kilometers of beach in Playa del Carmen
* Approximately 6.3 million cubic meters of sand were dredged from two sand banks – La Ollita near Isla Mujeres and Punta Norte off the coast of Cozumel – and pumped on to the Cancún shoreline.
* The Cancún portion of the project cost $650 million Mexican pesos
* Restoration was carried out by Mexicana de Dragados S.A. de C.V., an affiliate of Belgian company Jan de Nul, and coordinated by the Mexican Electricity Board (CFE).
* Two dredgers worked round the clock to restore Cancún’s beaches.
* Work advanced at a pace of 100 meters a day.
* A concrete barrier was erected between Punta Cancún and the Golondrinas Islet. Over 300 meters long and comprised of more than 13,830 concrete blocks weighing approximately 16,245 tons, the sea wall will help to reduce coastal erosion and sand loss.
* A 10-year monitoring and maintenance project is also planned.
* Sand pumping began in Cancún on November 1 and by December 16, beach project engineers had already reached The Royal Sands.
* Work started at The Royal Mayan on January 6 and was completed at The Royal Islander on January 14. Once the 12-meter-long pipes and heavy equipment were moved further south, resort staff reopened all the beach entrances.
* With only 400 meters of shoreline to restore, the Cancún project will be finished by the end of January and work is well underway in Playa del Carmen.
* Mexican President Felipe Calderón is expected to visit the area in February to inspect the beaches.

Dear Louis: Coors Light is not one of the more requested drinks at the pool bars, however the Restaurant Management team has indicated that they will be able to satisfy your request. When you are at the Pool Bars in The Royal Sands please identify yourself by name and they will serve your beer. I hope hat this helps. Enjoy your vacation.

My parents and I just spent two weeks at the Mayan and could not get enough of the beach. We have been going “home” to the Royals twice a year for 15 years and have never seen the beach so big. It is absolutely marvelous! While we enjoy the slower times and less people in Cancun, we sure hope that the beach restoration brings tourism back to what it once was or beyond. Everyone in the world should experience the beauty, the blessings and the wonderful people.

Dear Lorraine: Thank you for writing to Royal Resorts News. The rocks you mentioned were covered by sand during the beach restoration project. Swimming is permitted unless the lifeguard on duty decides that the weather and wave conditions – a strong breeze and surf – make it risky. When the red flags are flying on the beach swimming is prohibited. Yellow flags mean moderate wave action, swim with care and green flags indicate that conditions are perfect. I hope that this helps and that you and your family enjoy the beach.

The pictures are so beautiful. It is so nice to see the beaches are back. We have been to the royal resorts 4 different occasions. Last March we were there with our 3 boys. Its was so sad to see they couldn’t enjoy the beautiful beaches and water. Beaches look so good now. My question is this: We are returning because of the change, but are the resorts allowing people in the water? Just worried because not hearing much about if people are able to swim now or are there still problems with the rocks. thank you, lorraine

Wow, absolutely beautiful, can’t wait to walk on those beaches again! I love Cancun, and I love the Royal Resorts and my extended family there. A Huge Thanks goes out from my family to everyone that has made this possible. I cannot wait for my next trip “home.” Please let President Calderon and the Mexican Government know of my gratitude. Viva Mexico!

Dear Bob: Thank you for writing to Royal Resorts News. The Royal Haciendas was not included in the Playa del Carmen beach restoration project which took place on a 4.5 km stretch of shoreline further south in front of the town itself and Playacar. I hope that this helps.
